Single Trip Permits:

1. Q:
What is a single trip permit?
  A:
A single trip permit is a one time trip permit showing the origin and destination requested. It is vehicle, route, and load specific.
     
2. Q: How much is a single trip permit?
  A:
$60 state fee (additional $6 credit card service fee is applicable). To avoid service fees customers have the option to establish an ACH debit account. Obtain the AUTHORIZATION AGREEMENT FOR PREAUTHORIZED PAYMENTS form at:

3. Q: How long is a single trip permit valid for?
  A:
10 days.

4. Q: How do I apply for a single trip permit?
  A:
A single trip permit can be applied for by

6. Q: When is an escort required on a 2 lane road?
  A:

On a 2 lane road escorts are required as follows:

- Over 75’ long a front is required
- Over 10’6” wide a front is required
- Over 85’ long a front and rear is required
- Over 12’ wide a front and rear is required

7. Q: When is an escort required on a 4 lane road?
  A:

On a 4 lane road escorts are required as follows:

- Over 110’ long a rear is required
- Over 12’ wide a rear is required
- Over 14’ wide a front and rear is required
- Over 16’ wide a front and 2 rear required
- Over 120’ long a front and 2 rear plus a pivot/steerable dolly is required
- A rear escort is required anytime overhang is in excess of 10’

   
 
8. Q: What are the legal dimensions in Kentucky?
  A:

Width 8’ on non-designated highways.
8’6” on Interstates, Parkways and designated highways.
Length 65’ overall (truck, trailer & load) on non-designated highways.
Max 53’ trailer or load with no more than a 5’ overhang on Interstate, parkways and designated highways.
Height 13’6”
Weight 80,000 lbs AAA
62,000 lbs AA
44,000 lbs A
***Not to exceed licensed weight or road weight limitations***

     
9. Q: What is the maximum overhang allowed?
  A:
1/3 of the trailer length rounded down to the nearest foot.
The overhang can not exceed 35’ total.
A rear escort is required anytime overhang is in excess of 10’

10. Q: What are the holiday restrictions for Kentucky?
  A:
Kentucky does not have any restrictions for Holiday’s unless otherwise noted on the permit.
     
11. Q: What are the travel time restrictions for Kentucky?
  A:
All Overweight/Overdimensional moves, except mobile homes, can travel 24 hours a day 7 days a week unless otherwise noted on the permit. Mobile homes movements are restricted to Monday thru Saturday daylight hours only and no travel permitted Sunday.
     
12. Q: What counties have time travel restrictions?
  A:
No travel permitted for any Overweight /Overdimensional loads in Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Fayette, and Jefferson or at Owensboro KY 2155 bridge (between KY & IN) from 7 – 9 am or 4 -6 pm, Monday thru Friday.

13. Q: Can a single trip permit be amended?
  A:
No. The only exception is if the Permit Section makes an error in issuing the permit, that error can be corrected upon request.
     
14. Q: If I violate my Single Trip permit what will happen?
  A:
The permit will be confiscated by enforcement and be sent back to the Permit Section, at that time it will become Null/Void. The carrier will then have to reorder a new Single Trip permit & may be subject to penalties from Enforcement.
     
15. Q: Can a Single Trip permit be faxed?
  A:
Yes. Unlike the Annual permit the Single Trip permit does not have to be the original.
     
     
Annual Permits:

1. Q:
What is an Annual permit?
  A:
An Annual permit is a truck specific permit that allows that truck to move continuously throughout the state without having to contact this office for approval.
     
2. Q: When ordering an Annual permit and I don’t have a KYU # what do I do?
  A:
The Division of Motor Carriers will issue an E # in place of the KYU # for all carriers licensed less than 60,000 lbs for the purpose of ordering Annual permits. (No KYU tax filings will be required for carriers that hold an E #.)

4. Q: What type of Annual permit does Kentucky offer and how much do they cost?
  A:

5. Q: Can an Annual permit be faxed?
  A:
No, the Annual permit unlike the Single Trip permit KY Regulations state “The Original of the annual permit shall be carried in the O/W or O/D vehicle, or equipment at all times. An unauthorized copy of the annual shall not be valid.”
     
6. Q: When does a carrier with an Annual permit have to verify routes?
  A:
Routes need to be verified before any movement. Per KAR 601 1:018 the permit holder shall survey the rout prior to movement.

7. Q: How long does it take to get an Annual?
  A:
Once an application has been received it will take 7 to 14 business days to process.
     
8. Q: How do I renew an Annual permit?
  A:
To renew an Annual permit:
1) Download an application (TC95-25E) from our web site: http://dmc.kytc.ky.gov/forms#owod - Section 4
2) Make a copy of previous permit, making any necessary changes on copy.
*Note Kentucky request that Annual renewals be applied for 30 days prior to the expiration date in order to effectively return the annual in ample time.

9. Q: Can I get over height on an Annual?
  A:
No. Due to the multiple height restrictions in Kentucky it is imperative that each over height movement must be approved by State trained permitting staff.
     
10. Q: If I have an Annual permit and I am unsure of routing restrictions how can I check my routes?
  A:
Any time there is a question of restriction on a specific route you can call the OW/OD permit office at 502-564-7150 or contact the District Engineers office for assistance at: http://transportation.ky.gov/district.htm
Example: Restrictions due to construction, weight restrictions, lateral & vertical clearances.
     
11. Q: If I violate any part of my Annual permit what will happen?
  A:
The permit will be confiscated by enforcement and be sent back to the Permit Section, at that time it will become Null/Void and the carrier will be required to obtain trip permits while being placed on suspension.

12. Q: If I change my credentials such as my USDOT#, KYU#, E#, Company name, what happens to my Annual permit?
  A:
Making changes such as these will make the Annual permit Null/Void, but this information can be corrected by amending the permit.
     
13. Q: Can an Annual permit be amended?
  A:
Yes, an Annual permit can be amended, one time only and there is a $10 charge.
To Amend an Annual permit you must mail in the Original permit with a $10 fee and in writing any changes that need to be made.
